Hello Luigi,
You are Correct.
You can do all sorts of manipulation with images using The GD library
including transformations/Overlays etc.
You should check it out.
I started using the GD library with PHP version 3.07. Back then I used it to
generate graphs and chart on the fly as well as custom posters with dynamic
text overlays for an e-commerce application as an alternative to macromedia
flash.
