SQL Server provides a Virtual Device Interface that allows software vendors
to provide custom backup solutions, like snapshot backups. AFAIK, a DBA
doesn't need to do anything special. The vendor backup software takes care
of sending the commands needed for SQL Server suspend physical I/O during
the operation.
