OK, got it figured out....

IN the calling routine:

setXpathNodeValue($dom, $context, $pattern, $snode, $new_content)

And in the function declaration:

setXpathNodeValue(& $dom, $context, $pattern, $snode, $new_content)

and then use $dom. It works....
