It could be that the wireless dongle device falls asleep after a period
of non-use. Have you tried something like...

if (!($handle = @opendir($dir)))
{
sleep 2;
if (!($handle = @opendir($dir)))
{
sleep 3;
$handle = opendir($dir);
}
}
/* do stuff */
