You should just need to utf8_encode from html into a xml doc and utf8_decode
when you extract from the xml and view via html.
Here's how I store a value set via a html form in an xml doc:
$newnode->set_content(utf8_encode($_SESSION['price']));
Here's how I view the same value in a html page:
$price = htmlspecialchars(utf8_decode($arr[0]->get_content()));
