well, i had a similar problem and solved it by encoding my index.html
with utf-8, by adding this meta tag:

<meta http-equiv="content-type" content="application/xhtml+xml;
charset=UTF-8" />

now every odd characters i add to database through web form are
displayed exactly as i've typed them.
