You just shouldn't even think about writing XHTML until you've already
got some familiarity with both HTML and XML. XHTML doesn't yet work
cleanly for the current web, you have to work around a lot of problems
with it.
If you need some interesting and real-world XML to hack on, look at RSS
(or Atom)
