On my PHP installation (4.3.10), imagecolorallocatealpha() does not work at all. I have tried all of the examples in the function notes and quite a few more. The GD version is that which was packaged with PHP, which the documentation says should be able to use image blending functions.

Does anyone have a moderately quick solution? No real hurry.
