Perhaps, you could use a slight variation on the theme...
function clear_currency($cca)
{
$ccc = $cca;
$ccc = str_replace("\$", "[USD] ",$ccc);
$ccc = str_replace("£", "[GBP] ",$ccc);
return $ccc;
}
