Why does it have to be hidden? 
 
Maybe you're looking for something simple like: 
 
HTML: 
<textarea name="new_comments"></textarea> 
 
SQL: 
UPDATE `tablename` SET `comments`  =  
CONCAT('{$_POST['new_comments']}','\n',`comments`) WHERE #your clause...
