How exactly are you setting the timestamp value?

The following works fine for me (FreeBSD):

$timeStamp = mktime(0, 0, 1, 1, 1, 1965);
echo date("l dS of F Y h:i:s A", $timeStamp);

prints "Friday 01st of January 1965 12:00:01 AM"
