As John says: Consider using IDENTITY (the SQL Server equivalent of what 
Access calls "autonumber"). 
 
If there are reason's why you can't use IDENTITY, then use 
 
SELECT COALESCE(MAX(code), 0) + 1 AS code 
FROM   table
