Not really a dumb suggestion at all, but I did restart Apache. It
turned out the problem was elsewhere. What happened was that when I
recompiled PHP, I had pulled down the latest version, which was 5.0.4.
But the older version was 4.4.0. So the configuration scripts in
httpd.conf tried to load both the module for 4.4.0 and the module
for 5.0.4. They collided, and PHP wouldn't run at all. So the fix was
trival, just don't load 4.4.0.
