No, a good website with proper domain name makes you look professional.
..com is not the only one to do this.

Not quite. .co.uk is very useful for Britain-based companies. The reason
that the US doesn't have .co.us is probably because they hijacked the
global .com for that purpose.

Wrong. The .edu domain is for educational institutions, whereas the .org
domain is for any non-commercial organisation.

It's been up and coming since the beginning then. It's also primarily
for network providers, such as ISPs.
