Actually, I have no idea how it does it. I guess that if you have
SQL Server on your machine, it will default to the default instance.
That is at least what mine seems to be doing.
Anyway, maybe you should start to learn not relying on the Service
Manger. To wit, it's gone in SQL 2005....
