You can participate in many ways. You can write documentation, test the
program, file bugs, translate, make small improvements or start your
own branch of a program.
Not all projects will react to your contributions in the same way.
Sometimes it will take a long time for your contribution to become
accepted. I found that chatting with the developers (IRC, forum) will
get you more involved, so see if they support it.
When you have chosen your project, first get the program to run on your
own machine in such a way that you can make easy changes. Look into the
code and define a small change that you want to make, or a bug that you
want to solve. Let the other developers know that you are working on
this. Remember, if you tell them you do it, you have to. Start coding
and submit a patch.
