That was my speculation. Who knows what is really the rationale. At my
place we have pretty strict guidelines. Can't ask about marital status.
Asking about children is way, way of of side. Can't ask about foreign
language skill--dispite that's our main concern. Can't ask about age.
Can't ask the location of a university if we don't know where it
is--since that might give away someone's nationality. I always thank
god when one of the interviewees happens to be African American.
Impossible to know before hand, yet I know the risk of not interviewing
an under-represented minority--diversity training. We also have a rule
about posing the exactly same questions to all candidates. It's really
funny when I have to re-interview for my own job, having to pretend to
not know my own colleages and all.

Well, now you know how your tax dollars are spent, ha ha.
