The code has to be available either directly released on a webpage or it can
be requested from you via a valid e-mail, that is what is required of the GPL.
If you have code written by someone else you need to include credits to that
person and mark out what you have used of that work.

Support: Installation, configuration, patching help...

Of course company can hire a person to make an GPL project for them, but in
that case the company would be the owner of the GPL code and could in the
future to decide to change license form if there is no code that taint the
source with GPL. You can still maintain a for of the original project, but
think you still should post your patches to the company as they are the owner
of the code.
