Sorry for the delay in replying, I have not had a chance to follow up
your suggestion until today. The database is on the same machine as the
SQL Server and the System account has rights to the directory.
Nevertheless, I restarted SQL Server with a domain account and I am
now able to access the linked server! I have no idea why this worked.
