So validating it as follows would be just as safe?

echo '<br>year: '.(($article_year === '' )? 'null': $article_year);
echo '<br>month: '.(($article_month === NULL)? 'null': $article_month);
echo '<br>article: '.(($article_url === NULL)? 'null': $article_url);
