Sparingly? When it is forced on you by a bit of Tidy introducing
it to tidy up some confusions... Well, there you go, this is the
source of your problem, an unfamiliarity with css and a complete
lack of its overall role in any strategic approach to web
building.

Time for you to read up a bit Bruce.
