Use:

&lt;a href="index.html"&gt;Index page&lt;/a&gt;

or, maybe:

&lt;a href=&quot;index.html&quot;&gt;Index page&lt;/a&gt;

instead of:

<a href="index.html">Index page</a>

For example &lt; instead of < and &gt; instead of >.

There's a list at:

<http://www.htmlhelp.com/reference/html40/entities/special.html>

And perhaps put your code between <code></code> or <pre></pre> HTML
tags. There's some info here:
