I believe I've already acknowledged it, and presented an apology.

But if I have not, I recognize the possibility that I may be in error (if it
is an error). I am not convinced as of now that it is an error. I really
don't trust Mac fanatics very much. I see no reason they would have to ever
speak the truth, especially to me.

My brother tells me that a Retail version of OS X 10.4 will only install if a
previous version of OS X is already on the HD (or I have simply misunderstood
what he said, which is possible).

Of course, he could be in error himself, or I could be misunderstanding him.

But just so you will understand where I am coming from,

1) An OEM version of XP will ONLY install CLEAN, while a RETAIL version will
install on ANY machine, at any time, and will do either an in-place UPGRADE
of a previous Windows OS, or a NEW install on a HD which has NO OS on it (or
on a newly-formatted partition on that HD). so the difference between the
two is that an OEM version will only install CLEAN, while the Retail version
will also do an upgrade of an existing Windows OS.

2) So, I suspect that you do not mean the same thing I mean when I say "OEM"
or "Retail". Obviously, the terms mean different things to Apple and
Microsoft users.

3) I suspect that the Retail version of OS X is much like a Retail version of
XP (in fact, exactly like it). But, since APPLE itself is the OEM, they do
NOT sell "OEM" versions of their OS (as Wintel users would mean), since no
other manufacturer manufactures clones of Apple machines, while a Wintel can
be manufactured by ANYONE, even one's own self. XP OEM products are sold by
Microsoft to CLONE manufacturers or resellers, who then remanufacture the
discs to meet the specifications of their own machines, and in turn sell them
to end users, while XP Retail versions are manufactured only by Microsoft.

Microsoft DOES distribute "generic"OEMs to resellers. These are FULL
products, and contain EXACTLY the same bits as a normal "Retail" disc, except
the installer on the generic OEM disc will not allow one to do an in-place
upgrade of a previous Windows OS.

Does Apple sell a "Generic OEM" at a MUCH-reduced price like Microsoft, as I
describe above, which will ONLY do a "clean" installation? I don't believe
so...or will their Retail distribution only do a CLEAN installation, like
Microsoft's Generic OEM version? This is what I am in confusion about,
apparently.

This is one of the main reasons why the Retail version of XP is so much more
expensive than a "Generic OEM" version of XP.

And I assure you, MANY Wintel users purchase such discs LEGALLY, and
according to the Microsoft EULAs. This has been the way for Wintel users,
especially those who build their own systems, for many years.

However, MOST PC commentators try to tell us that ONLY a "Retail" version of
XP should be purchased. I am convinced that they do this because they are in
cahoots with Microsoft, or their editors tell them to, since their various
magazines are dependent on Microsoft for sales, ultimately, and of course,
they have a "don't rock the boat" attitude, which they try to foist off on
their readers. I'm sure that Microsoft would rather its OS sales were for
the Retail version, since they make so much more money for them.

So, Apple's Retail product is superior to Microsoft's, in this area, in that
it is about the same price as a "Generic OEM" version of XP Pro, and will
still install on ANY modern Apple, supposedly, while Microsoft's Retail
distribution is MUCH more expensive.

So many Wintel users try to avoid the Retail distribution, and purchase
"Generic" OEM distributions instead, for about the same price as the "Retail"
Apple product (which appears to be the ONLY Apple OS distribution third-party
distributors sell).

If they DO sell an "OEM" product, one which will ONLY do a NEW, "clean"
installation, as I have described for Windows XP "OEM" OS products, PLEASE
clear up my confusion. I do not want to unfairly indict Apple, in spite of
my negative attitude toward Apple Fanatics.
