Have you tried it? I did just that and it worked (with proper setup.)

....for an example. The head of Royo is an image, not a background. The
backgrounds of the numbered page links are inherited (to the body which
contains a random jpeg background image.) The links cover the image
transparently, and the page has no warnings.
