I know this is fairly old, but I was bored and digging deep...
Like, Janwillem Borleffs said, it actually *is* faster. I do the very same thing in my
code.
It is easier to maintain; read; and provides considerable speed gains (of course also as
stated, only when doing it a *lot*). I use it a lot in printing documents; directing HTML
to output, et cetera.
print '<item class="i can be sexy, single quotes make it so">das right</item>' . "\n"; //
filthy little newline
