Yup, when you try to format your HTML code nicely using:
echo "<textarea>
{$content}
</texteare>";
(or echo "<textarea>\n\t{$content}\n</textarea>";),
the whitespace will be saved.

Try echo "<textarea>{$content}</textarea>";
And check the source indeed.
