I think it's sad to choose a academic area just as a mean to get a job
in the future. You are basically letting your profession becoming who
you are. Those who choose CS, I would hope, do so at least in part out
of intellectual curiosity.
A good way to pick up practical skills, I've found, is by hanging out
in a newsgroup. It exposes you to a variety of everyday problems that
you might not encounter in your own situation. You will also find
insights that you won't find in a book.
