They are there to show appreciation to those who have encouraged
me to use PHP. To show an intention to use it in anger.

But seriously... they are there because this is just a fragment
from stuff I lifted to isolate the gallery from the
mouth-watering, tear-making gasp-of-wonder setting in which the
gallery sits (on a different server) - in a majestic orchestral
arrangement of navigation, background colours and pictures the
synthesis of which, the world would need to go back to Beethoven
to see who my ultimate mentor is.

More seriously still, Steven, the basic floated div idea is not
mine of course... but I like my id'ing and css'ing of the parent
divs better than what I saw at positioniseverything, no need to
class each float and the parent divs can be distinguished and
cleared without the floats being affected to separate the
landscapes from the portrait formats (which generally keeps
things looking tidy).

As for the list thing, it was mentioned to me as an aside by a
friend in conversation but I soon discovered that I was not up to
quickly working out how to use captions on that model.
