Thank you, that helped. Since I also wanted the text to be centered
vertically, I ended up with something like this:

<td>
<div style="width:100%;height:39px;overflow:auto">
<table style="width:100%;height:100%">
<tr>
<td valign="center" style="overflow:auto;">
<span>This text could be long and it is not supposed to heighten
the row</span>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
</div>
</td>
