the bit where i get all kinds of useful advice here (usually)...it was a
last-ditch effort to get an anwer. i did put a "forgive me for posting here"
comment in the op which *should* have made a reader *less* likely to
flame...but people are creatures of habit and wont to do so given the
anonymity of this medium.

since this is part of a php project, an alternate solution to handling this
delima in the query would have been...php.
