"Head First HTML & CSS"
It's modern, it's accurate, it teaches good practices, and it's very
readable. The style of this series is odd -- very lightweight and easy,
but you do have to read a chapter or so at a time. They're structured
as lessons, not just odd pages to dip into.
Lie & Bos' "Cascading Stylesheets" is a good next step for more
detailed CSS. Again it's a very readable tutorial, but it also makes a
good reference you'll use for years.
W3schools.com is dire.
