If your just looking for a design platform, like I was, I suggest
downloading phpdev from download.com. It sets up an apache/php/mysql server
on the localhost. True, they are older versions of each, but they all work
great together, and you can get yourself away from the setup stuff and into
designing. Anyhow, best of luck to you.

PS. Most of these guys are probably on linux boxes, and I think you and I
