I added the line
ini_set(session.use_cookies,"1");
at the top of each script (in my main include file)
But the

?PHPSESSID= etc..
was still in the URL

Sorry for not understanding this statement... but what do you mean by SID
Constant?

Will this stop the page from being indexed or just stop the Session ID of
the page being recorded?
