Thanks rik thats what was wrong

$sqlcount = "SELECT name, text FROM mainpage where lingo = 'en'";
$resultRES = mysql_query ($sqlcount);
$resultcount = mysql_num_rows($resultRES);

echo $resultcount;

the above worked fine
