Let's see... just off the top of my head...

1) The prognosis that you may live long enough to see the human species
become extinct through the inactivity of our respective governments re:
carbon emissions, and failure to forsee the result of such emissions despite
a 30 year warning. 30 years of inactivity regarding energy reform is pretty
depressing. Apparently, in a democratic society, it's enough to retain power
for the next term of office.

2) The realisation that rhetoric and/or the necessity for propping up an
aging and increasingly irrelevant oil-based economy is an excuse for waging
war on an unsuspecting 2nd world population previously led by a despotic
idiot, in order to maintain the status quo - why would you want to live in
such a society?

3) The realisation that the pursuit of happiness expressed as monetary gain
is a fruitless and ultimately empty, hollow goal, and merely hastens the
extinction of our species.

4) The realisation that, ultimately, the goal of life, in our society, is to
*die* as rich as possible, and that all other measures of success are
irrelevant.

5) The realisation that all other measures of success i.e. creativity
expressed as art or some other unrewarded pursuit are regarded as irrelevant
in a boring, non-creative economy that measures success in monetary terms,
are not valued by society in general.

6) The realisation that the extinction of the human species will ultimately
be brought about by not nature, but the human species itself.

7) The realisation that you have just brought into existence another human
who will have to grapple with these problems, and probably worse ones.

Isn't that enough to produce an itchy trigger-finger in your average Joe?

I realise that 7 isn't enought to make it to Letterman - u need 10, but what
the hey...
