A scanner just simulates entry from the keyboard. If the barcode is
'00113442' and they scan it, it will be like the user typed '00113442' at
the keyboard.

The trick is in designing the screen so that it can gracefully handle
situations where a person scans and the screen was not expecting it, stuff
like that.
