ImageReady does this automatically for you. You create your layers and you
tell it which ones correspond to which actions.

So you would create a button that is used when nothing happens. you then
create a layer on top of that bottom and tell ImageReady to use that new
layer, say, when someone clicks on the original. You just go through this
process and it will do all the html and javascript code for you.

Its actually pretty easy and I'm just making it sound more complicated. The
idea is to create or states and just tell imageready which ones are for
what. The slicing tool is used to slice up a graphic into differen regions
to make it much easier to work with and, in general, to limit the total
image sizes.

There are many tutorials on the net so I'm not going to bother with telling
you the details. Your first stop should be www.google.com and you can try
things like imageready, nav bars, image maps, rollovers, javascript, etc...

BTW, php isn't for this. Php is a script(code) that runs on the server and
dynamically creates html. You use php to automate a lot of tasks but it
doesn't do client side effects that your interested in. (although you can
use php to generate the html that will be ran on the client side so you can
do it in php but your first step is just to use javascript/css/html to get
what you want and then learn php to make server side dynamic web site(such
as using a database and stuff)).
