Hi,

to make your life easy I recommend to use a proper distribution (for
Linux) with a good security support and study the security announces and
adequate sites like <http://www.hardened-php.net/> if you are looking
for security. If you still need small PHP installations with more
extension builtin than supported by default to get small modules without
the need to use shared libraries.
For all other reasons to build your own PHP see
<http://de.php.net/manual/en/install.php> and keep in mind that you have
to do everything for each platform you like to support.
