Yep. If you're going to write stuff to run as shell scripts, perl is
great. It also works fine in mod_perl Apache modules. CPAN is quite a
comprehensive library of tools for just about any occasion.
php has it's own focus, primarily web-based. It depends on why you're
interested. I knew perl before I learned php. I chose to learn php to
learn something new, but you could say that about anything.
