Shockwave is a full blown presentation and application "thing". It's
pretty large, but has full 3D and things like that in it. It can be used
for creating stand alone applications, screensavers etc etc. I guess
it's long dead now that AIR is around.

Flash is lightweight and designed for WWW primarily, the player is only
a few Mb.
