It appears that you are editing the data through Open Table facility.
The normal way to update data in SQL Server is through INSERT, UPDATE
and DELETE statements. The Open Table function is a convenience function
for quick changes, but is not meant to be a replacement for an application.
It's not even to be compared to what you can do in Excel or Access.
Open Table has several shortcomings, and this is apparently one of them.

While the syntax for INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE maybe be cumbersome to
begin with, it's impossible to work with a relational database without
them. As a piece of data: I type INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE statements
daily. I never use Open Table.
