Final update.. having rolled bck to 5.2.0 the error no longer appears.
Following your idea, GM, I search for teh generic "PHP has encountered
an Access Violation at" and found a few (not many mind) posts that
said this was a 'bug' introduced after 5.2.1, so rolling back to 5.2.0
should fix it, and so far it has for me.
