AJAX stands for Asynchronous Javascript And XML. You already know a
server-side language (PHP), and you also already understand Javascript.
I believe the only thing missing is XML, pick up a book or read some
online material. Once you've done that AJAX is like second nature.

Also I'd suggest taking a look at, http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/AJAX
