So set your page widths to suit your site.
You could set your width to 1000 pixels.
Make up a division as a container for the entire page and put a border
around it. Then center the page.

I now have a widescreen monitor and I am designing my pages so they'll
fit on either without any problems.

You make your site the way you want to present it.
