I am certain this will help OP and also many others, it is good
of you to have taken the trouble.

I leave a quibble to last: Perhaps your "Basically, browser
defaults are there as a safety net, and should never be relied
upon." could be qualified to avoid the onerous responsibility
that is then thrust on the author if he were really to start his
CSS with

* {margin: 0; padding: 0;}

I don't think a newbie should be tempted down this road too early.
