The highlight_string function as you say is for displaying nice formatted
PHP code.

I suggest you use some kind of find and replace mechanism on the HTML
string.
Such as -
$newsrc = preg_replace('/(some phrase)/', '<span class="hilite">\1</span>',
$oldsrc);
