var_dump($xml);
unset($xml['NEWSFEED']['0']['MESSAGE']['2']);
$xml['NEWSFEED']['0']['MESSAGE']['2'] = array('something else');
var_dump($xml);
?>

You can reassign data any time you want.

I don't understand the problem you're having, personally...
