If you have a real wok, and a chimney starter, and don't care to
spring for the turkey fryer, get three good-sized wire rope thimbles.
Stoke up the 'starter, by pref with real charcoal (hotter than
briquets), and drop the thimbles equidistant on the edge of the
starter.
This gives you a good base for the wok, without smothering the fire.
You can get the wok much hotter than on a gas stovetop, unless you've
got a specialty burner.
