I made the window very small - 640 x 480. The reason your text is
"squished" (but still readable) is your use of tables.

If you continue to use tables, then move your nav buttons further to the
left and make them narrower. Eliminate the picture of the bird on the
right and allow the table to flow that direction as well. Utilizing
both suggestions would help add another 150px to the available space on
the page, resulting in less "squishing".
