1) Although you have the same alt information at the moment, no matter which
photo is shown, this was regarded as a first step by me.
The second step would be
to get the data from a database afterwards.
I would put the name of the image files, the size of the pictures and the
alternative information (alt)
The content of alt would change, depending on the picture.
It is not so easy for me to do all that but I want to try.
May-be you also want to explain to me how I would select only an image every
day and not all of them in the table.
Having said that I guess that we are talking about tabular data and not a
table for layout purposes..
Thus, I doubt whether a <div> would suit the needs which I explained above.

2) Besides, I have the feeling that your design leaves too much empty space.
It is only my humble opinion, other people may feel in a different way

Did you think about how much we human beings pollute the environment in
which animals ( included sea-gulls) also live?
